The crown jewel of the San Antonio Convention Center is Lila Cockrell Theater, illuminated in 2010 with Kirlin 250-watt and 500-watt T-4 Quartz downlights and adjustables. Although beautiful, energy consumption and air conditioning load expenses were high. Rather than accepting a cheap retrofit band-aid, the client’s engineers recognized the long-term value of procuring a new state-of-the-art system of LED luminaires and controls. The piece de resistance came from Kirlin: the upgrade kit ensured no disruption of the ceiling, which reached dramatic 100’ heights.
Kirlin delivered a top access solution that minimized contractor time with a simple 1 for 1 replacement of the original recessed housing’s top pan and upper T-4 quartz optical assembly with a new top pan containing the LED lighthead module, heat sink, and DMX driver. Two RJ-45 connectors for DMX-in and DMX-thru provided a simple plug-in daisy-chained power distribution to the ETC controller.
The solution began with 205 medium flood downlights delivering 2500+ Lumens with full range dim-to-black capability, which provides the ideal house lighting aesthetic. 5000 Lumen adjustables, some with spot distribution, were the ideal LED solution for the sloped ceiling area above the orchestra.
The result speaks for itself: nearly perfect in every way!
Lila Cockrell has extended its run from the 1968 Hemisfair Premier to this Encore in the 21st Century!
