David H. Koch Center Hybrid Operating Rooms

When the New York-Presbyterian David H. Koch Center opened in 2018, there is no question that it was the most technologically advanced and patient-centric healthcare facility in New York City, if not the world. In discussing the building’s design intent, CEO Dr. Steven J. Corwin explains, “Every decision about the design and operation of this building was made with the patient in mind, from the quick and easy check-in to the private prep and recovery rooms, light-filled treatment areas, and real-time status updates. This is truly an environment that was designed for healing, and we believe it represents the future of ambulatory care.”

Of course, one of the most important ways to enhance the patient experience is to enable rapid, accurate diagnosis and treatment. The center’s hybrid MRI/PET/Angiography Suite, illuminated by Kirlin’s market-leading MRI lighting system, is the first of its kind anywhere in the world. The suite enables clinicians to diagnose, plan, operate, and verify the effectiveness of their procedures, all in one room. “From a patient’s perspective, currently, you would have to go to three different places to get the same type of procedure that you can do in one room,” says Jean L. Aime, director of radiology and imaging. 

In addition to this innovative hybrid operating room, Kirlin’s surgical-grade downlights are trusted throughout numerous other operating spaces within the facility, which combine procedural activities with imaging in a single location, enabling faster and more accurate diagnoses and treatments.
